ProSAAM: Program for Strong African American Marriages

Steven Beach PhD, Tera Hurt PhD, Lily McNair Phd, Frank Fincham Phd

ProSAAM is designed to help African American couples in their aspirations to have strong and healthy relationships. It incorporates major aspects of the skills and principles building program PREP (The Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program) and is based on a five-year intervention study funded by the Templeton Foundation and conducted at the University of Georgia. ProSAAM is groundbreaking for the thoughtful and innovative way prayer is used throughout the curriculum to help strengthen and protect marriages. In addition to the spiritual emphasis, the program includes material and activities that recognize how institutional and implicit racism affects the success of African American marriages.
