- COMMUNITY MARRIAGE STRENGTHENING TRACK AT SMART MARRIAGES
> Diane,
> Our community is in great need of marriage strengthening. This will be our
> first conference. We're able to bring a team of three couples from our
> community and would like to focus our resources on building a community
> marriage coalition. We aren't sure what to take.

> - D & E

Key: ACF = Administration for Children and Families; CHMI = Community Healthy Marriage Initiative

Before I list sessions that are focused on the "how to" of forming community
initiatives, team building, funding, etc, I want to point out that the federally funded
Community Healthy Marriage Initiatives arcoss the country are based
solidly on marriage EDUCATION. Thus the ENTIRE conference is basically a tutorial on
"HOW TO" get yourself equipped and qualified as instructors to teach couples how to
strengthen marriage and prevent family breakdown – how to turn things around
in your community. Your team of six can certify as instructors in a range of marriage education
programs for dating, premarital, newlyweds, new parents, couples in trouble and on
the brink of divorce, stepfamiies, youth, fathering, parenting, low-income, ethnic, etc.
YOU MUST HAVE PROGRAMS THAT YOU CAN TEACH in order to form a Coalition or
make a change in your community. If six of you fan out and cover the bases, you can
return home prepared to teach a dozen programs to couples at any stage. Be sure to
check out the pre and post conference Training Institutes and the TOOB programs.

So, some of your team MUST focus on training and qualifying/certifying as
instructors in various programs while others of you can focus on the courses listed below
- the "how to" get organized workshops (grant writing, research and evaluation,
marketing, domestic violence guidelines, TANF set-asides, divorce legislation, teaching in youth settings,
prisons, health settings, etc.)

You will also be able to network with the ACF representatives at the conference,
stop at the ACF Exhibits and meet key national staff, and attend morning roundtables hosted by ACF
directors for African American and Hispanic initiatives.

Also realize that this annual, national gathering includes thousands of very generous people who will
share with you what has and has not worked in their community. Do not miss the many
NETWORKING opportunities - the Morning Roundtables, the Afternoon Teach-Ins, etc   This year
the concern is on losing the Healthy Marriage federal funding and/or in understanding what the
proposed changes in funding mean.  Be sure to attend the "Saving the Marriage Money" Teach-In Friday
at 5:15pm - for a scheudle vist:

Getting State Money: The 1% Solution
Chris Gersten, Krista Sisterhen, Mary Myrick
Learn how to access state marriage money - how to open
doors and build relationships with state and federal elected
and appointed officials.

756-817 – Marriage Rally: Teach In (Repeated annualy, but we suggest you listen to each year's
recordings to get all the background you can. Each year is different and crammed
with ideas you can use.)
Transforming Communities Grassroots Style
Julie Baumgardner, MA, Nisa Muhammad, Jennifer Baker, PsyD, MFT
Learn what communities across the country are
doing to strengthen marriage and how you can
follow their lead. Brainstorm about opportunities
– free media, the web, funding, volunteers, creating buy-in
- and how to avoid the stumbling blocks.

If you're serious about organizing a Community Healthy Marriage Initiative and going after funding, I strongly
encourage you to not only attend the Smart Marriages conference to learn AND NETWORK, but, also, to
listen to the wisdom that has gone before. LISTEN to past sessions and get "in the know" - its a wonderful
tutorial on what has gone before presented by your very generous colleagues 2003-2007: click for listings.
